ASNH publicizes outreach events on their website, and we report attendance after the event. Recently, the NSN website showed that since we became a member of the network, we have had over 50,000 visitors attend our public outreach events. That is a milestone to be proud of!<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"303\" src=\"https:\/\/www.asnh.org\/ShootingStar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/NightskyNetwork.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3561\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.asnh.org\/ShootingStar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/NightskyNetwork.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.asnh.org\/ShootingStar\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/NightskyNetwork-300x182.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong><strong>Regional Water Authority Private Viewing Event on Saturday, March 8<\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>By Donna Pursley<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were invited to do a stargazing event at the top of the hill next to Lake Gaillard in North Branford. This is part of the drinking water supply for New Haven. The event was open to employees and hiking pass holders of the water company. It was a very clear night and a very bright Moon. There were about 7 scopes and maybe about 100 visitors to look through the scopes. I think it was a good turnout considering that it was very cold. We were able to show them Jupiter, Mars, a crescent Venus and even Mercury for about an hour before it set. The Moon was a terrific object to show everyone but its brightness made it hard to see many other deep sky objects. We still found plenty to show them. It was a good crowd including a future women astronaut. I think they went home happy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\" id=\"block-6a96c345-acbe-4504-94b5-5c4d78187c51\"><strong>Upcoming Observing Events<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Members with telescopes are needed for these outreach events. The number and password will be given in the announcement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--nextpage-->\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Lunar Occultation of Mars, January 13, 2025<\/strong><\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>By Chris Predom<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These pictures show my journey of the Mars Moon occultation. All photos and the movie were taken with my iPhone. They start with a wide view of the Moon, Mars, Castor and Pollux. Next are images through my 8-inch f 4.5 Coulter dob.&nbsp; I used my 35mm Tuthill Plossl, my 17mm Televue Plossl and my Astrotech 100-degree 9mm eyepiece. While viewing the Moon Mars gap close, I took many photos by holding the iPhone to the eyepieces.&nbsp;As the disappearance neared, I just observed the event while it took several seconds for Mars to sink behind the Moon. It was fun to watch it slowly&nbsp;sink. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next was the reappearance.&nbsp;I decided to try making a movie of it with the iPhone.&nbsp;Some quick tests before Mars appeared showed it could be done.&nbsp;I managed to catch the reappearance, until I lost my distance holding the phone to the eyepiece. I was happy with what I obtained, plus I still got a chance to watch Mars reappear on my iPhone screen. My brother took this image of the Moon and Mars with our Unistellar go-to scope while he enjoyed the occultation. Mars is the dot just below and left of the small crater at the bottom left of the Moon. At my place, I started to track the Moon closing in on Mars at about 8:50 pm with my 5.1-inch Short Tube Newtonian Richfield Scope. I was able to follow the little Mars disc slowly come near and get occulted by the full Moon. It was amazing watching Mars getting covered by the Moon. The second full Moon in any month is often called the Blue Moon while the second new Moon of any month is called the Black Moon. I just read about this and I found it very interesting. I would love to go outside to view the new Black Moon, but alas all new Moons are invisible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Friday, January 3, 2025.<\/strong> Four of us enjoyed the close encounter of Venus and the Moon. My friend Rose watched it from her house, my co-worker Ray and I watched it from Sports Haven where I work part time, and my brother Anthony watched and imaged the close encounter of Venus and the Moon. In this image by him, Venus can be seen to the lower left of the Moon. All four of us agreed it was a beautiful sight. I spotted Venus first high up the western sky as it was starting to get dark out. Just above and to the left was Saturn which is inching its way to Friday and Saturday&#8217;s conjunction with Venus. I then looked almost overhead to see bright Jupiter with the waxing gibbous Moon east of Jupiter. To see Mars, I had to reposition myself in the employee lot and there it was, the angry red planet Mars. What an interesting way to end the workday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Friday, January 17, 2025.<\/strong> I enjoyed the conjunction of Venus and Saturn from the parking lot at my part time job. Venus and Saturn looked good together with just my naked eyes but when I looked at them with my 10&#215;50 binoculars, I was blown away! Anthony and my friend Joe watched it from Joe&#8217;s house and Anthony imaged this with our Uninstellar telescope. Saturn is on the observer&#8217;s left and it was much dimmer. What I discovered was how black the sky was in my very light polluted area. The Sunday night mini snowstorm had made the skies completely dark which occasionally happens when a hurricane, tropical storm or a Nor&#8217;easter hits us. When I saw how bright the Orion constellation looked, I bundled up and took out my 5.1-inch Short Tube Newtonian Richfield Scope so I could examine the nebulosity throughout the whole constellation. With my Barlow lens, I had about 40 power. I first looked at the belt stars and sure enough the &#8220;haze&#8221; around them was quite pronounced. The Orion Nebula was more outstanding than it usually is, but the real deal was when I started to look at the fainter stars, because I was able to see nebulosity around them also! Before I went inside to watch the second half, I noticed a very clear patch of ice on my deck railing so after the third quarter ended, I came back out to examine the snow and this clear patch with my 60-power field microscope. The snow under my microscope looked like clear small crystals even though the snow was white. When I examined the clear ice, I was able to find about seven microscopic water drops trapped inside the clear ice. Thanks to this snow event, I was able to enjoy some science with my telescope and microscope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Monday, January 27, 2025.<\/strong> This morning at 10:22 am, a 3.8 magnitude earthquake hit just off the southern Maine coastline. I was in my condo at that time, but I felt nothing and I heard no creaking. I checked my detector and all the balls stayed on the stems. I also checked my pictures hanging on my wall because that is one of the questions asked in the earthquake report I fill out. Sure enough, one of my pictures was askew and this was the first time ever one of my pictures was ever affected by an eastern earthquake. Even though the results are always mixed, I still enjoy trying to track these earthquakes. This type of radio astronomy is always very interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Monday, February 24, 2025.<\/strong> When Anthony and I were discussing observing the crescent Venus, I suggested he take an image of Venus with just his digital camera with the zoom lens. The image came out looking like a miniature crescent Moon. It was hard for me to tell if they were not related to each other or part of a loose open cluster. After looking it up, I realized I was looking at the loosely packed open cluster NGC 2354. It has many stars in it but with my Richfield scope I had to satisfy myself with seeing 15-20 spread-out stars. After 15 minutes of freezing, I had to retreat back to my house. It was a good show for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Saturday, March 8, 2025.<\/strong> Anthony, our friend Ray, and I watched Venus and Mercury fairly close to each other in the western sky. Venus was dazzling as usual while Mercury to the lower left of Venus was also pretty bright itself. In fact, Mercury was quite easy to see with our naked eyes. As a bonus, we looked straight up at the Moon-Mars close encounter. They were just 1.7 degrees apart. It was a nice astronomical double-header for us to view.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Saturday, March 29, 2025.<\/strong> I got up to try and see the partial solar eclipse. The middle part of the Sun briefly broke through the clouds by about 7:00 am and I did glimpse the shading on the Sun&#8217;s right side. Of course, only a very small area was eclipsed because the eclipse ended about 10 minutes later. It is moving away from Earth now, and its disk will gradually shrink in apparent size during this time period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-303dd809-143c-412f-a6d1-8d65324a1d98\"><strong>Mars<\/strong><br>Mars will be visible in the evening throughout the spring as it moves through Gemini, Cancer, and Leo. It will be far from Earth, and its small disk will probably not show much of interest through a telescope. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-303dd809-143c-412f-a6d1-8d65324a1d98\"><strong>Jupiter<\/strong><br>Always a good telescopic view, Jupiter will be an easy target during the early evenings of April and the first part of May. It will be more difficult to spot after that, and in June it will be too close to the Sun to observe.<br><br><strong>Saturn<\/strong><br>Saturn will be in the morning sky this spring. Its rings will be nearly edge-on, and that may produce some interesting views through a telescope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-303dd809-143c-412f-a6d1-8d65324a1d98\"><strong>Uranus<\/strong><br>Uranus will be close to the Sun during these three months and very difficult or impossible to observe. By the end of June it will begin to rise higher in the east during the morning twilight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p id=\"block-8a62bb6b-65cd-4ce2-865f-87532cacf2d6\"><strong>Neptune<\/strong><br>Throughout 2025, Neptune will close to Saturn, making it possible to locate this gas giant by using Saturn as a starting point. The first picture was taking using my 4-mm Astrotech uma (80 degree) eyepiece.&nbsp; The image shows a starfish-like shadow.&nbsp; The image was done holding my iPhone to the eyepiece.&nbsp; I then used the iPhone zoom feature to zoom in on the image coming from scope to enlarge the shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next two images are the region around Copernicus&nbsp;using the 4-mm eyepiece and an iPhone zoom closer to the terminator region from&nbsp;Copernicus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The image of Venus was taken with same scope using a 30-mm Tuthill Plossl . We were at the highest elevation in our neighborhood in North Branford but the trap rock quarry limits the view even if there weren&#8217;t clouds. We went to West Wharf in Madison and watched a bank of clouds on the eastern horizon, hoping that a hole would appear so we could see the Sun. This did not happen, but just as the eclipse was about to end at around 7:05, the Sun appeared above the clouds. Through solar binoculars, we could see a small but definite flattening of the left edge of the Sun. This lasted for 2 minutes at most. This picture was taken with a Canon T6i camera at a focal length of 86 mm.
